Pemex commits to going green

THE NEWS
Pemex has signed an agreement with the Environment Secretariat and the nation’s top environmental protection agency to make its facilities more environment-friendly by the end of the current administration.
During a four day conference organized by Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), Juan José Guerra Abud of the Environment Secretariat (Semarnat), Emilio Lozoya of Pemex, and Guillermo Haro Bélchez, director of the Special Prosecutors Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa), said that the agreement will bring reconciliation between Pemex and environmental authorities.
The agreement calls for alleviating environmental damage caused by Pemex and its partner companies.
“The idea behind the trilateral collaboration is to turn Pemex into a visionary in the field of sustainable development, in accordance with the new energy reform,” said Haro Bélchez.
Guerra Abud added, “Too much time has been spent on talking and not enough time on doing, which is something we plan on rectifying.”
The conference included workshops dedicated to raising environmental consciousness and developing environmentally sustainable technologies.
“A new spirit of commitment to protecting the environment could really be felt,” said Guerra Abud. “The relationship between energy and the environment is a mutualistic one, since energy is harnessed from the environment and any sort of process will have ecological consequences.”
The agreement also aims to improve the efficiency and timeliness of disaster response protocol, as well as to reduce the occurrence of illicit activities resulting in the aftermath of natural disasters.
