Mazatlán-Durango Highway Prompts Cancellation of Charter Flights

The July-August summer season, when nationals take their vacation each year, sees charter flights from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua and Monterrey bringing tourists to Mazatlán for their vacation. However, according to Gloria Villanueva de Tirado, president of the Association of Travel of Sinaloa, airline charter flights from Cuidad Juárez and Chihuahua have been cancelled for this upcoming summer.
Carlos Berdegué Sacristán, vice president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism Companies, acknowledged that with the opening of the Mazatlán-Durango highway the demand for air travel from these cities has almost disappeared.
Gloria Villanueva de Tirado noted that last year there were five weekly flights from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua and Monterrey, each with a passenger load of 150.
Carlos Berdegué said, “For this summer season, there will be no charter flights from Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua. Because with the Mazatlán-Durango highway people prefer to come by road, but Monterrey will continue its charter flights.”
