Industrial Production Rose in March

México’s industrial production was up 3.4 percent in March, while growth for the first quarter of the year was up 1.6 percent of the same period of last year.
Eduardo Sojo, head of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), said the 3.4 percent increase for March was the largest monthly gain since July 20012, when it was 3.5 percent.
He said some of the gain can be attributable to the timing of Easter this year. In 2013 Easter fell in the month of March, where Easter was in April this year. This meant that the month of March 2014 had more working days when compared to March of 2013.
However, the growth was also attributable to growth in three of the four economic sectors, he noted.
During March of this year the manufacturing sector grew by 6.8 percent; while the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, water and gas by pipeline to the final consumer advanced 4.1 percent; and mining rose 0.6 percent. Construction was the only sector to produce negative numbers with a decline of 1.4 percent.
