Mexico’s National Sanitation and Food Quality Service (Senasica) and
General Quality, Inspection and Quarantining Supervision Administration
(Aqsiq) have signed agreements establishing protocols for the
exportation of Mexican beef to China.
A Food Production Secretariat (Sagarpa) press release on Sunday said
that the secretariat is carrying out actions to “drive the
competitiveness and productivity of the Mexican primary sector,” and
that the requirements are being met to make sure Mexican beef enters
this important Asian market.
Aqsiq and Chinese technicians carried out a series of audits from
Nov. 29 to Dec. 6 on Mexican veterinary services, as part of what the
press release called “the process to advance the opening of the Mexican
beef export market.”
The Chinese group, headed by the Anhui Province Chinese Inspection
and Quarantining Service (CIQ) Director Jiangzong Liang, visited the
Senasica laboratories and National Animal Health Verification and
Diagnostics Services centers (Cenapa and Cenasa), as well as places
where animal feed is produced.
This news comes as part of Mexico’s bid to increase trade with China.
Sagarpa announced in November that Mexico would shortly begin to export
strawberries, blackberries and cranberries to China.
China is increasing its food importation, a sign of its growing food
insecurity problem. Pollution and a growing population has led China to
search outside the country for food sources. Mexico is just part of the
nation’s global strategy to ensure a food supply for its population.
China has acquired over 3.5 million hectares of prime farmland in
foreign countries over the past few years.
Mexico is in a position to take advantage of this supply and demand
dynamic, but also has a domestic consumption problem. Almost 80 percent
of Mexico’s food is imported.
Although Sagarpa recently announced that agricultural exports will
decelerate this year, the promotion of agricultural products is still
expanding into other markets such as China.
Sagarpa officials are currently waiting for Chinese officials to release an official report on their findings.
