The U.S.-based electronics company Johnson
Controls announced on Saturday that it would spend more than 455 million
pesos ($35 million) to build a new plant in Durango City.
According to a state government press release, the new plant — which
will manufacture heat exchangers — will create more than 300 jobs during
both the construction and operation stages of the project. The company
decided to build in Durango because Gov. Jorge Herrera Caldera convinced
them, the press release said.
According to State Economic Development Secretary Ricardo Navarrete,
Johnson Controls is one of the world’s leaders in the electronic parts
industry, listed at number 64 on the Fortune 500. It records global
annual sales of $35 billion.
Herrera Caldera said that the first stage of the new plant will have a
surface area of 12,000 square meters (129,000 square feet) and Johnson
Controls will give preference for engineering positions to the graduates
of Durango technical schools.
Enrique Villa, the Durango director of Johnson Controls, said that
the second stage of the plant’s construction will be even larger.
“We are considering, with great interest, the Industrial Logistics
Center in Durango City, as it offers unequalled competitive advantages
in terms of logistics,” Villa said.
