National Action Party (PAN) Senate Coordinator Jorge Luis Preciado Rodríguez said on Monday that President Enrique Peña Nieto and the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) should not lie to the Mexican people about the benefits of the recently-passed energy reform, which he said will not be seen for at least 10 years.

The government has launched a huge publicity drive to boost support for the unpopular reform, claiming it will result in lower electricity, natural gas and gasoline prices.

“We have to tell the truth and not lie to the Mexican people,” said Preciado Rodríguez, whose party supported the energy reform. “This reform won’t be seen in the short term, that is, these are investments of between $20 billion and $50 billion, which won’t be made tomorrow … people will realize that everything continues as it was before.”

Preciado Rodríguez said that this will happen because Pemex will continue to be the country’s only oil company and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) will continue to be the only electrical company for the next five years.

He went on to say that the reform will nevertheless bring important benefits, saying that electricity costs will drop once Pemex begins controversial practices like shale gas extraction.
