Juan Pablo Castañón, President of the Employers’
Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex), attended President
Peña Nieto’s signing of the Energy Reform. After the ceremony he said
that Mexicans could expect a 25% – 30% reduction in the cost of energy,
especially the cost of electricity.
The Coparmex president said his expectation of reduction
is based upon international prices, noting the price of electricity in
México is about 30% higher than the international average.
He said, “Hopefully next year we will see this reduction
in the price of energy,” after Congress has passed the secondary laws
of energy reform. Juan Pablo added that the energy in México costs 25 to
30 percent more when compared to the average OECD country.
Juan Pablo Castañón also said that the energy reform
will also bring a substantial increase in employment for Mexicans,
saying México should see increased investments in its energy sector,
which will benefit small and medium businesses.
