MEXICO CITY – Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho arrived in Mexico on an official visit Wednesday.

Following the ceremony welcoming Passos Coelho, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said that the visit would create an opportunity to strengthen relationships between the two countries.

Peña Nieto said that his meetings with Passos Coelho “have the goal of creating a better and closer relationship between Portugal and Mexico … this means better development, closer relationships, more job growth and a greater economic dynamism.”

The two heads of state signed a series of agreements and treaties to promote improved air connectivity between their respective countries and establish bilateral cooperation on energy efficiency, renewable energy, foreign trade and the fight against crime, as well as science, technology, culture and sports.

“We analyzed the state of our exchanges and created instruments that will allow us to have better bilateral relations,” Peña Nieto said. “The Mexican government celebrates the agreements reached today, which will allow us to have a variety of new legal instruments focused on promoting cooperation in many sectors.”

According to Passo Coelho, “Important bases have been established for the relationship between Portugal and Mexico to be better and contribute to the development and growth of our respective people.”

Mexico is Portugal’s second largest commercial partner in Latin America and the fourth largest outside the European Union.

Passos Coelho said that it’s undeniable that Mexico offers great opportunities for Portuguese companies, adding that the agreement signed yesterday could push the two countries to work together.
