Trade between the United States and Mexico plays an important role in creating jobs in the U.S., Sandra Fuentes-Berain, Mexico’s consul-general in New York, said Wednesday.

At an investors forum on innovation in Latin America organized by Cornell University, Fuentes-Berain said that 6 million U.S. jobs directly depend on trade with Mexico.

“I believe that the basis of the successful relationship between Mexico and the United States is in the trade and investment flows that create jobs in both countries,” she said. “This is something that’s difficult to communicate to some people.”

Estimates made by the United States government indicate that each billion dollars in additional exports end up creating 6,000 new jobs in the U.S., Fuentes-Berain said. She added that it’s complicated to overcome the disbelief of the average U.S. citizen regarding the importance of their country’s economic relationship with Mexico, which imports $216 billion worth of goods from the U.S. each year, more than any other trade partner except Canada.

According to Fuentes-Berrain, bilateral trade between Mexico and the United States is worth $1.3 billion a day.

“People tell me that they do, after all, see many avocados that come from Mexico, or that they buy very good Mexican tomatoes,” Fuentes-Berrain said. “But what we primarily export to the United States are other products,” adding that bilateral trade between Mexico and the U.S. is very important for the automobile and aeronautics industries.
