The newly-opened Durango-Mazatlán Superhighway will lead to more infrastructure for the region’s health sector — including new hospitals, more jobs and better benefits for doctors — Durango Gov. Jorge Herrera Caldera said Tuesday.

Herrera’s comments were made on Doctor’s Day celebrations, where he told general practice and specialist doctors that his administration will spend 400 million pesos ($30.1 million) on purchasing equipment for the newly-built 450 General Hospital.

“In my administration, health is a priority,” Herrera said, expressing his profound respect for the profession of those gathered to celebrate Doctor’s Day. “My administration has been concerned and occupied with promoting concrete actions that will guarantee free and timely healthcare access to all of society.”

He went on to say that the Durango-Mazatlán Superhighway will allow for Durango’s economic growth, bringing in more industrial development and tourism, which will benefit everybody, with doctors and hospital infrastructure coming first.

Durango City Mayor and former Durango Health Secretary Esteban Villegas Villareal also said that healthcare will be a priority during his three years in office. Villegas said that his Municipal Development Plan includes the goal of promoting preventive healthcare and providing patients with better services.

According to Durango Health Secretary Eduardo Díaz Juárez, the state government is working to improve the quality of patient care and the number of hospital beds.
