Port, Schools Closed as Tropical Storm Manuel Stalls off Coast

Flooding

As tropical storm Manuel continues to hug the south Sinaloa coast for at least another day before descending on Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur, Port Captains closed harbours to small craft from Mazatlan to Topolobampo until further notice.

Hours before, the government had raised the storm alert to yellow for six areas on the Pacific coast, including Sinaloa, and the Secretary of Education announced the closure of schools in ten municipalities in central and southern Sinaloa.

The director of the Sinaloa Institute of Protection, Ismael Checa Landeros, said they are expecting heavy rain falls of between 70 and 130 millimeters mainly during early morning hours.

Mazatlan Mayor Alejandro Higuera told media rain in the amount of between 70 to 150 millimeters was recorded in the municipality yesterday but no floods or landslides were reported.

As of 8pm last night, 63 boats had sought refuge from the storm in Mazatlan’s port.

Lifeguards closed beaches in Playa Bruja, Valentino, Olas Altas and Los Pinitos due to heavy waves. However, Mazatlan surfers were out on their boards taking advantage of the high waves in Olas Altas and beside the Valentino complex.
