First report on Mazatlán shrimp season

Ricardo Michel Luna, President of the Union of Ship Owners of the Pacific Coast, said that for the first ten days of the shrimp season the catches are averaging 3 to 4 tons. Although the volume is less than the previous season, the higher price for shrimp this season helps offset the shortfall.

Michel Luna noted that although the rains generally help shrimp fishing, the heavy winds caused many shrimp boats to return to harbors for safety reasons, which adds to the cost of the first catch.

The president said the first trip cost an average boat owner 1 million pesos ($76,000), assuming there are no serious mechanical or other problems. He added that 60% of the ship’s cost is the cost of diesel fuel and each month the price of diesel increases.

Although a preliminary view of the shrimp season looks favorable, it is still uncertain, he said.
