Sunday, July 7th, is election day in many municipalities throughout Mexico. In Sinaloa, the election Ley Seca (Dry Law) whereby sales of alcoholic beverages are prohibited until after election day, goes into effect beginning tomorrow, July 6th, at 8pm.

Alcohol inspector for southern Sinaloa, Demetrio Pompa Lara, told media businesses not adhering to the regulations will face temporary closures and strong sanctions.

In Mazatlán, the sale of alcohol will be suspended in stages, beginning with supermarkets which will stop selling at 8pm, followed by beer outlets (depósitos) at 9pm and bars and restaurants at 11pm.

The last to suspend sales will be nightclubs, said Pompa Lara, who can serve alcoholic beverages until 2am on Sunday, July 7th.

However, there are exceptions to the law.

Restaurants with bars in Mazatlán can offer alcohol but only when accompanied by a meal.

Restaurants, bars and nightclubs located in the tourist zones of Centro Historico and the Golden Zone are permitted to sell alcohol during normal business hours in accordance with their licences.

Families holding parties at Event Halls are permitted to consume alcohol but events selling alcohol are not permitted.

There are more than 1,500 businesses in Mazatlán, including Concordia, El Rosario and Escuinapa, with alcohol licenses, said Pompa Lara. Those which do not respect the law will face closure from 15 to 30 days and a hefty financial fine.

Approximately 25 inspectors and personnel from the Official Mayor´s office will be monitoring the situation. (from Noroeste)
