Fare for Air Conditioned Buses to Increase

Last month the Department of Roads and Transport for Sinaloa approved an increase of 50 centavos in the fare of local buses without air conditioning. Yesterday the Department approved the same increase in the fare of the state’s air conditioned buses, excluding the “tourist buses.”
Although for most riders the new fare will be eight pesos, up from the current 7.5 pesos, the fare for students will remain unchanged. The fare increase will go into effect when the ruling is published in the state’s official register, which is expected to occur on August 13.
The bus associations’ union was against the 50 centavo increase, as they had argued that an increase of 1.5 pesos was needed.
With this increase the fare for air conditioned buses has increased 3 pesos, or 60 percent, from the 2004 fare of 5 pesos.

Bus Fare Increases Today

Forty of the current bus routes average only 200 passengers a day.
Forty of the current bus routes average only 200 passengers a day.
Beginning today the fare to ride one of the city’s buses without air conditioning will be seven pesos, up from 6.5 pesos.
Jóse Carlos Osuna Osuna, President of the Alliance of Mazatlan’s buses, said an option now facing the association is whether to air condition all of the city’s buses. He pointed that the projections show that such an improvement would increase ridership from 400 to 600 passengers per day in 40 different routes.
He noted that such a change would require a significant investment. In addition to the cost of the air conditioning system, diesel fuel consumption would increase 15 to 29 liters per day.
Osuna pointed that 40 of their current bus routes average only 200 passengers a day, which requires those routes to be subsidized by other profitable routes.
Tomorrow authorities are to discuss whether the bus fare for existing air conditioned buses should be increased.

Bus Fare to Increase

The Department of Roads and Transport for Sinaloa approved an increase of 50 centavos in the fare of local buses without air conditioning. Although for most riders the new fare will be seven pesos, the fare for students will remain unchanged. The fare increase will go into effect when the ruling is published in the state’s official register.
Jesús Antonio Marcial Liparoli, who serves as technical secretary for the Department, said that the fare for the air conditioned buses will remain unchanged, although the fare for those buses will be under consideration for an increase in fare and deliberation will begin within the next two weeks.
He added that once the study has been completed the public will be advised of the outcome. But for now the fare will remain at 7.50 pesos for adults and 3.50 pesos for students.
