According to the recent Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) proposal, Mexico can reduce its emissions by up to 40 percent by 2030 by implementing actions for clean energy and curbing climate change, Environment Secretary Juan José Guerra Abud said Wednesday.

Speaking as the guest of honor at the presentation of the first General Motors (GM) electric car for sale in Mexico, the Spark EV, Guerra Abud said that the plan establishes the commitment to reduce emissions by 30 percent by 2020. Announced in March, the agreement represents an unconditional commitment to a more sustainable future, he said.

The INDC proposal establishes the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by the year 2030, as a baseline measure.

With the actions of the government and contributions by industrial partners like the auto sector and the agreement to implement electric car changing stations, among other actions, “Mexico can arrive at an almost 40 percent reduction,” Guerra said.

The secretary recalled that the challenge facing Mexico and the rest of the world is known as climate change, inspiring carmakers like GM to introduce more electric vehicles to the market, like the Chevrolet Spark EV. These companies have the right idea, he said.

Following the event, Guerra said in an interview that there are currently more than 200 electric vehicles driving around Mexico. With the commitment to facilitate the installation of electric charging stations, the market and technology will soon begin to grow, he said.

One of the defining factors that determines the culture of using electric vehicles is their price, the secretary said. The growth of the electric vehicle market will begin to push prices down, he said.

On Wednesday, GM announced the introduction of its first electric vehicle to the Mexican market. The Spark EV has a range of 132 kilometers on a single charge and will go on sale in June.
The car will cost around 500,000 pesos with a three-year or 60,000 mile maintenance program and an eight-year warranty on the battery.
