Gov’t officials discuss digital literacy in Nuevo León

THE NEWS

During the inauguration of the Coordination Board for the Mexico Online program in Nuevo León, Communications and Transportation Secretary Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said that 40 percent of all Mexicans have access to the Internet. This figure surpasses countries such as Hungary, Portugal and Turkey. Chile is the only Latin American country with a higher percentage than Mexico, with 43 percent of its population connected to the Internet, he said.

Currently, there are 65,000 public spaces where people can access the Internet, and 96 percent of the 2,400 municipalities in the country have a place where its residents can go online.

Today, the Internet is not a luxury, but a tool for personal growth and development, Ruiz Esparza said.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said that the 21st century demands that Mexico be better technologically prepared to compete and succeed in the global market.

The national strategy, which the board is helping to establish, is to create 250,000 public sites in different schools, hospitals, libraries and plazas with free online access, he said.

There are already 32 places operated by Mexico Online, one for each state. Those who are unable to or do not know how to navigate the Internet will receive training, Peña Nieto said.

Digital literacy is one of the great challenges for the 21st century that all levels of government face, with the goal of having 100,000 public spaces with Internet access throughout Mexico, he said.
As a consequence of the telecommunications reform, prices for online services have decreased 17 percent, Peña Nieto said.
