Restaurants Caught Between High Costs and Low Menu Prices

Restaurant owners, in particular those serving breakfast, are caught between a rock and a hard place as prices for basic ingredients have risen considerably.

First it was beans that rose to 25 pesos a kilo, then beef to 140 pesos and eggs at 36 pesos a kilo. When pork began selling at 110 pesos per kilo, it affected the price of its derivatives of sausage, ham and bacon.

Owners of restaurant stalls in Centro market who sell breakfast beginning at 25 pesos which include eggs, sausages, bacon and vegetables (salsa) say they are thinking seriously of increasing their prices, but they need to all be in agreement. Someone, they said, has to put a stop to the rising costs of basic foods.

Taco, hotdog and seafood vendors are in the same predicament, in particular seafood vendors who have seen the price of shrimp, crab, octopus and scallops “go through the roof.”
