Britain and Mexico signed four energy cooperation agreements Thursday as Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto wrapped up a three-day visit.
The president spoke with the media in Aberdeen, where he praised the Scottish city for its contributions to clean energy.
Peña Nieto and Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael attended the signing of the agreements in the Scottish oil base of Aberdeen, promising to share information and expertise on development of oil and gas resources.
The four agreements cover broad cooperation under a joint energy steering group, closer links in reducing carbon emissions, a credit line of up to $1 billion to help Mexican energy firms buy British technology, and co-operation between Aberdeen University and Mexican state oil giant Pemex to train energy specialists.

“Scotland’s oil and gas industry is seen as a world-leader in terms of expertise, skills and resilience across the world,” Carmichael said.
“Mexico is a key partner in this, and the recognition of our industry and academic skills are important for both countries as they work together for mutual benefit,” he said.
A variety of educational agreements were signed between British and Mexican universities. The agreements touched on various topics, including the reciprocal recognition of degrees and grades that are given by both nations.
Great Britain will increase the number of scholarships that are given to Mexican students in various areas of study fivefold, he said. This will help improve the professional development of Mexican youth, the president said.
Honorary consulates will be opened in Manchester and Cardiff, along with extending the cooperation between the two nations on tourism, an area with ample room for growth, Peña Nieto said.
The president returned to London later Thursday to bid farewell to Queen Elizabeth before ending his visit.
The queen had hosted a royal welcome and a banquet for the Mexican president Tuesday.
