Long-distance rates the same in 3 years

In three years’ time mobile long distance charges will be the same whether you’re in Mexico or the United States, says AT&T boss Randall Stephenson.

The telecommunications giant, whose purchase of Mexican mobile provider Iusacell completed two weeks ago, announced Tuesday that calls to Mexico from the U.S. are now included in its World Connect Value plan, which costs US $5 a month.

In an interview in Davos, Switzerland, Stephenson told CNN that Mexicans will enjoy the same benefit by 2018 upon completion of a new network. “Our expectation, which we want people to know is our objective, is that if you live in Mexico your experience will be no different than if you live in New York and it will cost the same . . . .”

The company’s focus in Mexico will be more on building broadband wireless Internet capacity than voice telephony, said Stephenson: watching video on a cell phone or tablet will be fast, reliable and accessible cost-wise.

First, however, it will be necessary to build the network and upgrade Iusacell’s systems, which the AT&T chief described as primitive.

He foresees the company, now No. 3 in terms of market share, being No. 1 or No. 2 within 10 years.

AT&T, the second largest mobile operator in the U.S., bought the Mexican firm from Grupo Salinas for $2.5 billion plus debt. It has about 9 million subscribers.

Stephenson was in Davos for the World Economic Forum.
