Hospice Mazatlan, IAP – Annual Newsletter – 2014

Hospice Mazatlán IAP is a non-profit community based healthcare organization.
Hospice Mazatlán IAP is a non-profit community based healthcare organization.
Thanks to your support, Hospice has continued helping a growing number of patients and their families through most difficult times.
2014 was an extremely busy year. We served 182 patients and their families compared to 132 in 2013, an increase of 38%. Total nursing visits grew by 25% from 2616 to 3271 in the same period.
HERE IS A RECAP OF MAJOR EVENTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

1ST PLACE AWARD – CHOSEN AS THE TOP NON-PROFIT IN THE STATE OF SINALOA
On November 28th, Hospice Mazatlan received “El Premio Merito Filantropica 2014” awarded by JAP in recognition of the charity’s superior contribution to its community. The criteria were, 1) accountability in finances, 2) transparency and 3) being an example of “loving your neighbor” and having a direct connection with the people served. JAP is our state governing body for IAP category IAPs – those most closely monitored by the state. They not only monitor our finances but also interview families served, our staff and board members. We are especially proud of the impressive, highly detailed presentation of Hospice prepared by our hard working administrator, Adriana Carrillo Paredes. Adriana has also been responsible for Hospice grant writing.

FUNDRAISERS
We held three major fundraisers in 2014. The Annual Golf Tournament continues as our largest fundraiser. A huge thanks to those on the committees who guaranteed a rousing success – Dave Croly, Hector Treviño, Jack Sieber, Terry Topf and Jack Moreau. Also, a large thanks to all the golf day volunteers who assured a good time for all attendees and sponsors.
Hearts for Hospice Dinner/Dance. A big shout out to Anne Murphy who headed the committee for this successful event. Gracias to all the ladies who helped put it together and, especially, thanks to all the attendees.
Chili Cook-Off. We wish to thank Casa de Leyendas for hosting our first Chili Cook-Off. In addition, we appreciate the participating cooks, judges and organizing team.

DONATIONS & GRANTS
We are grateful to have received grants form Sedesol and Monte de Piedad. These monies helped to cover the cost of providing hospice care, enabling us to serve a growing patient population.
Habitat covered the cost of first aid and cancer prevention classes. One hundred people graduated from the first aid class and were given basic first aid kits. As part of the cancer prevention classes, 140 pap smears were completed of which 120 were covered by Habitat. The other 20 were paid for by generous contributions from local expatriates. Thank you! The results were significant. One person was found to have cancer and 2 had dysplasia. All 3 were referred to physicians for treatment. 60% were found to have a degree of cystocele and 50% had sub clinical infections that were treated by the physician giving the pap smears. 30% of the women were found to be in the normal range.
Ojala. Due to their donations we were able to provide clothing and several food items to 5 families who had lost young mothers. The children were under care of their grandmothers and had no assistance from their fathers. Thank you to Hazel Reeh, Patty Posey and Bobbii McCloud.
Pollo de Navidad. This organization gave out 300 chicken dinners this year. Thank you to Brenda Guerro and her volunteers for their kind, loving work. Marlen Sanchez, our social worker, coordinated with them to see that 35 of our Hospice families received this assistance. Thank you, Marlen.
Dr. Simi. This organization provides despensas for our families as they go through very difficult times. Money and food are major issues for them. We are very grateful to Dr. Simi for the food items we can pass on to families in need.
Baker City, OR Rotary Club.   This year we received a cash donation and we are very grateful for their continued support. Finding funds is always a challenge.
Art Classes. Thank you to Sharon Fannin for her one day “Art & Wine” classes. This past year she taught two classes with all proceeds going to Hospice. The attendees had a great time and went home with their own original art.

SUPPORT GROUP
The Grief Support Group was launched in November, 2013 and we served 113 people through individual and group sessions. Octavio Robledo is the trained professional psychologist who runs the group sessions and sees some individual patients. Alejandra Kelly specialized in needs of the children.
DAY OF REMEMBRANCES
The first Sunday in December was our “Day of Remembrances.” Hospice gathered all the patient families served the prior year – a total of nearly 300 people – to remember their lost loved ones. After emotional presentations, including poetry and music, family members placed a flower in a large wreath and it was ceremoniously offered to the sea in recognition of suffering, loss and letting go.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
All staff members attended a Tantatologio class this year. It was held in Mazatlan as “Psiologia de Duelo/Intervenir en la Perdida.” This class focused on grieving and the grief process. Our goal was for our staff to improve their ability to communicate with the families experiencing great emotional stress while losing a loved one. Special thanks to Aurora Garcia de Treviño for her series of continuing education classes, and to Judy Wolfberg for conducting regular English classes.

Hospice continues to grow and reach out to those in need. We could not achieve our goals without your assistance.
