During 2014 automobile manufacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz announced new manufacturing plants in México for their cars. Additionally, Nissan announced a second plant for Aguascalientes; and Mazda and Honda each announced a second plant for Guanajuato.

IHS, the automotive research firm, said these announcements have motivated automobile parts manufacturers to follow them to México. IHS said “the close relationship between original equipment manufacturers and assemblers prompted the relocation of part of the global production of auto parts to México, because proximity is the key to reducing costs production.”

TE Connectivity, which manufactures electronics for automobiles, moved its plant in Shakopee, Minnesota to the state of Sonora, which meant 144 new jobs for México and an investment of $20 million.

Delphi, which also makes electronics for automobiles, invested $71 million in its Juarez, Chihuahua plant and hired 1,402 workers between October 2012 and September 2013. It currently employs 15,000 people, said spokeswoman Claudia Tapia.

In March of last year Advance Motors, a manufacturer of electric motors, announced it was moving most of its manufacturing jobs from its De Witte, New York plant to Monterrey, México.
