Operators of Gasoline Stations to Create Own Brand

Under Mexico’s energy reforms beginning in 2017 gasoline stations other than Pemex will be permitted into the retail market.
Fernando González Piña, director del Consejo Empresarial Gasolinero Valle de México (CEG), a business organization that brings together owners of service stations in the states of Puebla, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Hidalgo and the Federal District, told reporters the opening of the market to retail sales gasoline in two years will be “a huge challenge in terms of cost competitiveness and quality of service.”
The opening of the gasoline sector under the energy reforms “ended the comfort zone of franchisees and we cannot operate alone, today we must understand that the only way to compete is in groups,” he said.
When asked if ECG would create a brand to compete in the marketplace, González Piña said: “We intend to create our own brand, which will be finalized by the end of 2015 and be ready for the marketplace in 2016. He added, “The more fuel we buy in groups, the greater the possibility of lowering the price to the final consumer.”
When asked by reporters if there were any companies interested in building and operating refineries in México, he said, “When the energy reform was announced, but now the transnational corporations are interested in exploration and not in building refineries.
