Three Companies Submit Bids for Public TV Networks

Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones (IFT), the Mexican regulator for the country’s telecommunications industry, said that only three companies have submitted bids for the planned auction of two public television networks.
The IFT said that it had approved proposals from eight interested parties on November 13, but that only three had decided to bid.
In a statement, IFT said those companies are Centro de Informacion Nacional de Estudios Tepeyac, Cadena Tres and Grupo Radio Centro. The former two are part of the Vazquez Raña family’s group of companies, while the third is controlled by Francisco Aguirre.
The two new public television networks are the result of sweeping telecommunications reforms, passed last year. The reforms seek to open up markets controlled by Carlos Slim’s America Movil and Televisa.
The IFT said the winning bidder will be selected on March 19 of next year at the latest, describing the process as Mexico’s first-ever auction of spectrum for free-to-air, nationwide TV networks.
