BEIJING – The Chinese government Wednesday hailed an agreement that allows a consortium of companies from the country to build Latin America’s first high-speed train in Mexico, and said it hoped the project would boost bilateral cooperation between the two nations in other fields as well.

“The project marks an important milestone in bilateral cooperation in the field of infrastructure,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said at a press conference.

“We hope that the cooperation in this project improves the strategic partnership between the two countries,” he stressed.

The consortium led by China Railway Construction Corporation won the bid to construct a high-speed train linking Mexico City to the state of Queretaro, in central Mexico.

The project is expected to cost around 50.8 billion pesos ($3.7 billion) and create some 60,000 jobs.

The announcement of the contract came just a few days ahead of Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto’s arrival in China where he is scheduled to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, among other activities, on Nov. 11-12.

Peña Nieto is to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping as well as other leaders of the country in Beijing.
