Solar energy is on the move in Mexico, as the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) is busy approving projects and even institutions of higher learning get into the act.
Spanish solar energy company Dhamma Energy will build a 37.5 MW photovoltaic solar power plant in Guanajuato next year through its Mexican subsidiary Delicias Solar.
The project is the first for Dhamma, but not the last: the company has plans to develop 350 MW worth of solar projects by 2018.
The first plan will require an investment of US $80 million, and will create 300 jobs in its construction.
The permit for the project was approved in July by the CRE, and was one of several totaling 170 MW in capacity and all are scheduled for completion next year.
In Tamaulipas, already energy-rich in non-renewable sources, a university plans to be the first in the country to source 100% of its energy needs from a solar installation.
The Autonomous University of Tamaulipas in Ciudad Victoria will invest, with state help, US $45.5 million in a 10 MW solar plant that will go into operation in 2016.
The solar panels will be installed on a 20-hectare site in the municipality of Guémez.
