MEXICO CITY – With the purpose of working towards increased ties between the European Union and Mexico in order to realize the full potential of relationships with Europe, Spain’s European Affairs Minister Iñigo Méndez de Vigo came to Mexico City for a work-tour on Oct. 3. To continue developing the ongoing high-level political dialogue between Mexico and Spain, Iñigo Méndez de Vigo met with Foreign Relations Secretary José Antonio Meade Kuribreña and other top level officials. The affairs minister and secretary discussed the Action Plan for Increasing Strategic Association, signed by the two nations on June 10 when President Enrique Peña Nieto visited Spain. The arrangement aims to ensure that Spain and Mexico contribute positively to the Agreement for Economic Cooperation and Political Coalition between Mexico and the EU.
During the meetings, the officials discussed the current state and future potential of relations between Mexico and the EU, and how the two nations are working towards taking full advantage of the close relationship they currently enjoy.
Méndez de Vigo and Meade said that in the final act of the subcommittee of Political Affairs in May, and the final act of the Binational Committee in June, Mexico and Spain increased joint action. The binational committee created increased trade investment, cooperation and political dialogue, said the officials.
In a joint statement, the affairs minister and the foreign relations secretary said that they began a dialogue about how to revise the Agreement for Economic Cooperation and Political Coalition between Mexico and the E.U. Particularly, Spain’s government is committed to beginning these discussions quickly and mediating the process, said the statement.
The discussions are a continuation of informal conversations that add to work being done at the EU headquarters in Brussels and the embassies of Mexico and Spain. The official meetings aim to promote continued positive development for both countries and the EU as a whole, said the statement.
Mexico and Spain are committed to continue developing productive dialogue, conferences and meetings to consolidate and improve the process of hosting binational summits, said officials. The two governments are also committed to creating tangible material results from the Mexico-European Union Strategic Association and the Joint Executive Plan which gives content to the strategies.
Mexico and Spain have enjoyed close cultural and political relations in recent years as Spain aims to make an economic recovery, while continued effects of the global recession keep property value and employment low.
