A Canadian utilities and energy firm has won its first project in Mexico, but it anticipates it will be the first of many.
Atco Mexico will build, operate and maintain a natural gas pipeline in the state of Hidalgo after winning the US $50-million contract last Wednesday from the Federal Electrical Commission (CFE). The 16-kilometer pipeline will supply fuel for the Francisco Pérez Ríos power plant near Tula, and is expected to be in service next year.
Based in Calgary, Alberta, Atco is looking for Mexican partners to participate in more of the pipeline and energy projects that will follow the lifting of restrictions on foreign and private participation in the energy sector.
“We didn’t come here to work alone,” said James Delano, who is in charge of the company’s Mexican operations. “It’s important for us to work with someone who knows the country well,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg.
Over the next few years there will be pipeline and power projects worth as much as $5 billion, including the construction of 10,000 kilometers of pipelines.
Among Atco’s competitors in the field will be the Mexican unit of United States-based Sempra Energy and another Canadian firm, TransCanada Corp., both of which already operate pipelines here.
Atco has operations around the world employing 9,000 people, and has assets of $17 billion. It plans to model its business in Mexico on Canadian and Australian operations, where it is focused on power generation, natural gas and electricity distribution and workforce accommodation and site services.
