Toyota said to be scouting factory site

It’s only been two weeks since the last time a new automotive assembly plant was announced in Mexico, but another might be coming soon, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The agency said today that Toyota Motor Corp., the last of the big auto makers without a complete assembly plant in Mexico, is scouting locations. Two people reported to be in the know said the Japanese firm was looking at various states, and met this week with federal officials for preliminary discussions.
But at this point neither the size of the plant nor the timeframe has been defined. “We are always evaluating opportunities in North America in line with market demand, but no decisions have been made,” said company spokeswoman Tania Saldana.
The world’s biggest auto maker in terms of production, Toyota has a small truck factory in Tijuana where it produces the Tacoma pickup but it’s not considered a fully assembly plant. Its annual output is 63,000 vehicles.
The new Mazda plant in Guanajuato, which opened in February, will eventually produce Toyotas as well, with production expected to total 50,000 units a year.
Kia Motors announced last month it would build a US $1 billion factory in Nuevo León that will produce 300,000 cars a year.
