Mexico’s Manufacturing Employment Grows 2.5%

MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s manufacturing employment grew 2.5 percent in July, compared to the same month in 2013, the National Statistics Institute (INEGI) said on Thursday.

The number of line workers increased by 2.7 percent, while the ranks of administrative personnel grew by 1.3 percent, the INEGI said.

Manufacturing workers’ hours rose by 3.7 percent in July, compared to July 2013, while median compensation, including pay and benefits, increased 1.6 percent.

Employment expanded by 0.21 percent in July on a seasonally adjusted basis, compared to June, with the number of hours worked rising 0.98 percent and real compensation increasing 0.14 percent, compared to June.

Mexico’s industrial sector employs 12 million workers, of whom about 7.9 million are in manufacturing and the rest in construction, power generation and mining.

Manufacturing is one of the main sources of jobs in Mexico’s formal labor market, whose ranks grew to 17 million in August, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) said.
