President Peña Nieto yesterday became the first president of a Latin American country to be presented a Global Citizens Award by the Atlantic Council.
The council said the Mexican president was nominated for “his extraordinary leadership” in creating the Pact for Mexico, the multi-party agreement that ushered in the sweeping reform program, and for having secured those “profound, far-reaching reforms” in less than two years.
The changes, the council says, “have already recast Mexico’s image as a global innovator.”
In his acceptance speech, Peña Nieto highlighted the changes ushered in by the reforms and Mexico’s position in the Americas, where it has a strong presence in Latin America but belongs as well to North America.
He also highlighted Mexico’s relationship with the United States, with which it shares more than 3,000 kilometers of border and trade equaling US $1 million a minute, making it the U.S.’ third major trading partner.
Other winners this year were Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko, former Israeli President Shimon Peres, former Singapore Prime Minister H.E. Lee Kuan Yew, American actor Robert De Niro and American musician Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner.
The awards were presented at a banquet last night in New York City.
