The hurricane and rainy season in Mexico has resulted in basic food prices rising this month, media reported.
In Mazatlán, chiles serranos went from 10 to 18 pesos a kilo, tomatoes from 6.50 to 10, white onions doubled from 5 pesos to 10 and potatoes doubled in price to 17 pesos a kilo.
The per kilo price of meat also increased from 120 pesos to 130. Christian Velarde, a stall owner in Mazatlán´s central market, explained that heavy weather such as hurricanes stress cattle who then eat less and do not obtain their optimum weight until later, delaying sales. He expected prices to stabilize by October but until then they will continue to fluctuate daily. (from Noroeste)
