Cruise Line Changes Port of Call to Mazatlán

cruise-shipAlfonso Gil Díaz, Chief Executive Officer of the Port Authority of Mazatlán, said that the devastation seen by Baja California Sur may end up having a positive effect on Mazatlán. He noted that the damage to Los Cabos will adversely affect tourists that normally come to Cabo San Lucas via cruise ships.
He said that his office has been contacted by Norwegian Cruise Line with their need to divert their cruise liner, the Norwegian Jewel, from calling on Cabo San Lucas, scheduled for September 28. The passenger capacity of the Norwegian Jewel is 2,400 with a crew of 900.
Gil Díaz said before the end of the year there is the possibility that an additional six cruise ships, currently not scheduled for Mazatlán, may change their port of call to the city. Some of which may spend the night in port, which greatly enhances the city’s revenues, he added.
The CEO of the Port Authority said that between Princess, Carnival, and Holland America Cruise Lines there are 14 stops scheduled for Cabo San Lucas between September and the end of December.
If these cruise ships call on Mazatlán this would give the city the opportunity to show both the cruise lines and their passengers what Mazatlán has to offer and what they have missed, since deleting the city as a port of call in 2011, said Gil Díaz.
Gil Díaz said the dock where the tenders depart to and arrive from the cruise ships anchored off Cabo San Lucas was severely damaged and it is currently unknown how long it will take to make the needed repairs.
