Ukraine is in the news a lot, but not in a sense that the country wishes. What Ukraine does wish for, along with peace, is greater cooperation with Mexico, according to its ambassador, Ruslán Spírin.
One of the areas in which the two countries could work more is the energy sector. Mexican dams such as La Yesca, Aguamilpa and El Cajón already utilize Ukrainian turbines, but there are other opportunities still.
“Ukraine can help Mexico by investigating petroleum deposits with its satellites, as well as in extraction, production, refining and transport systems of that (oil) resource and gas. We have experience with the major pipelines that transport gas from Russia to the European Union,” the ambassador said in an interview with El Universal.
The two countries are already working together on a satellite that could be employed for improving the use of energy resources or for security. The respective space agencies of both countries have an agreement to collaborate, and they expect to launch the satellite within three years.
There are plans to construct a launch site and share technical assistance about rockets and special planes. A visit to Mexico by officials from the Ukraine Space Agency is programmed for October.
The ambassador also said Mexico could benefit from the investment in a repair facility for Ukraine-built Antonov aircraft, and mentioned Puebla as a location as well as the possibility of a manufacturing plant in the future.
Asked about the conflict with Russia, Spírin said Russian troops must quit the border area. “Russia says it wants peace with Ukraine and wants to send a convoy of humanitarian aid, but on the other hand it sends troops in trucks just a few kilometers from the border, with military technology so advanced it can bring down a plane from an altitude of 10,000 meters.
“We don’t need that kind of cargo, but instead that they use the trucks to retire their troops.”
The diplomat observed that 23 years ago Mexico was the first Latin American country to recognize Ukraine as an independent country.
