Mexico is the world’s sixth largest producer of chicken but that production isn’t enough to satisfy domestic demand.
The United States Department of Agriculture forecasts that Mexico will be the world’s largest importer of poultry next year, overtaking Japan. Those imports are expected to grow rapidly over the next 10 years.
Domestic production of chicken, this country’s most popular meat, was 3 million tonnes last year, while imports of poultry products totaled 785,000 tonnes, most of which comes from the U.S.
Much of the imported American chicken consists of legs and thighs due to the large gap in demand between white and dark meat. Americans prefer the white meat of the breast.
The U.S. is the second largest exporter of poultry, selling 4.27 million tonnes last year. Brazil is the world’s top exporter at 4.86 million tonnes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Chicken is one of the least expensive forms of protein available in Mexico, which is probably why the average person eats 29 kilograms annually. This liking for poultry also includes eggs. The average Mexican eats 335 eggs a year, the highest rate of consumption in the world.
