The center will be paid for from Federal funds originally earmarked for the Pino Suárez market upgrade.
At a meeting this morning city council members were presented with the construction of a new Centro de Seguridad Cuidadana to cost 80 million pesos from federal funds. The money was originally earmarked to modernize the Pino Suárez market in El Centro but when stall owners and their association could not agree on how the funds were to be applied, the 80 million pesos was diverted to what is essentially a new municipal police station.
Municipal director of investments, Roberto Díaz, told council members 21,000 meters of land had already be found for the building. It is located on Av. Luis Donaldo Colosio and Antonio Toledo Corro, two major municipal thoroughfares.
Its location will permit faster response time, said Díaz, for the six public service departments to be installed in the center: municipal police, traffic police, civil protection, fire department, State police and Commander’s office.
Secretary of Public Security, Juan Antonio Murillo Rojo, commented the construction of the new center will bring dignity to the police corps, pointing out the existing deteriorating building does not have the requisites to provide services citizens are entitled to.
Mayor Felton added they are also planning to build a public parking area at the center, presently lacking at the old police headquarters.
