First it was Formula 1; are baseball, football and hockey next?

coach's cornerThese guys might have to brush up on their Spanish.

Coming soon to a stadium in Mexico: Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Hockey League.
At the moment it’s speculation, but according to Mexico City’s director of sports, it’s gone well beyond the rumor stage.
The announcement that Formula 1 racing would return to Mexico next year has renewed interest in this market among the three North American sports leagues, says Horacio de la Vega.
The “red lights went on” for the NFL, “who are showing interest again in returning to our country with some games . . . .” he said. No conditions have been defined but negotiations are continuing to come up with a contract that satisfies both sides.
As for Major League Baseball, once the new Mexico City baseball stadium for the Diablos Rojos team is complete, an MLB game “will definitely be sought.” De la Vega believes it won’t be complicated because there are teams that have already expressed interest.
As for hockey, he said, the NHL coming to Mexico would be without precedent. “We continue to negotiate with them, and the truth is they have shown themselves to be very approachable about coming. They are very interested in the Latin market and they know that Mexico is a great platform.
“I calculate that by the end of this year we’ll have great news about this league.”
For any of these events to come to pass, Mexico City’s facilities would require refurbishing on a grand scale.
