Cruise ship companies have increased their port calls in Mazatlán up to and including the year 2019, announced port director Alfonso Gil Díaz.
The 2014 winter season is expected to bring 20 ships to Mazatlán, with a further 68 in 2015, most carrying 2,200 passengers.
Gil Díaz considered this to be a positive signal and vote of confidence in the port after cruise ships cancelled arrivals more than three years ago for security considerations.
Speaking to reporters, the port director said: “(the arrivals) signify confidence in the city, that things are quiet, and that we are an important link in the Pacific route because without (Mazatlán) the route would not be competitive.”
He went on to explain that cruise ships voyages usually last seven days and need at least three ports of call to offer an attractive package to clients. The Riviera del Pacífico route will include Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán.
Increasing their ports of call in the city are Holland America, Norweign Cruises, Azamara Cruises, Princess Cruises and Carnival cruise line, which announced a few months ago it would return.
Gil Díaz reminded those present at the press conference that itineraries are subject to change at any time and that the number of arrivals could either increase or decrease.
He also announced that a committee of State representatives will attend the annual cruise ship company association convention in Saint Martin in early October with the goal of signing those companies which have not returned, in particular Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line.
At the convention, the Pacific ports will present a combined promotion outlining the attractions of each destination.
A total of 209 cruise ships are programmed for Mazatlán until 2019.
