Representatives of Mexican governments and the aerospace industry are in England this week for the Farnborough International Airshow, where two purchases have already been announced, with a hint of more news to come.
The Mexican Navy has taken delivery of its first Beechcraft King Air 350ER, and will receive three more next year. The planes will be stationed at the naval base in Veracruz.
And Viva Aerobus has selected Pratt & Whitney engines to power the 40 Airbus A320 aircraft it has on order, with options for 40 more.
Mexican ambassador to the United Kingdom, Diego Gómez Pickering, said at the opening of the Mexican pavillion that he anticipates some important announcements in the next few days regarding investments in the Mexican aerospace industry.
That industry already employs 43,000 people and its exports are worth more than US $5 billion annually. The country’s strategy, according to Carlos Sánchez Pavón of ProMexico, is to become a place where the entire manufacturing process of an aircraft can be completed, from design and engineering to manufacturing and assembly.
He said there are currently 300 aerospace businesses operating in 18 states. Nineteen of those firms, along with nine states, have sent representatives to Farnborough, a week-long biennial show that is one of the world’s largest.
More than 200,000 people attended the 2012 show.
