Int’l tourism rising in Mexico

MEXICO CITY – Between January and May of this year Mexico recorded an 11 percent increase in the arrival of foreign tourists by air, reported the Integrated Operation System for Migration (SIOM) and the National Migration Institute (INM) on Wednesday.
According to the agencies, there were 5.8 million passengers on flights between January and May of this year exceeding the same time period in 2013 by 575,000.
According to the SIOM, there was an increase of 13.9 percent in the number of visitors from Europe. The UK recorded the highest number of tourists followed by Spain, Germany and Italy.
Travelers from Asia, China and Korea remained at the top with rates of 20 percent, while those from Japan increased 14.1 percent.
The majority of vacationers from South America came from Colombia and Chile, and the report showed a significant increase in visitors from 30.8 and 31.3 percent.
Meanwhile, the number of tourist from the U.S. showed around a 13.1 percent growth in the month of May with 597,000 visitors coming to the country. According to SIOM there were 83,500 Canadian visitors, which represented an increase of 12.7 percent.
Cruise tourism is also on the rise in Mexico, especially in Quintana Roo this year more than 3 million tourists came to Quintana Roo via cruise ships.
