MEXICO CITY – The Secretary of Communications and Transportation (SCT), Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, said Thursday that the National Infrastructure Program 2014-2018 will make a minimum investment of 7.8 trillion pesos ($600 billion), of which about 1.32 trillion will be allotted to improving telecommunications as well as land and air communications. He said this investment will greatly benefit all Mexican citizens.
Speaking at the National Infrastructure Forum 2014, “Communication and Development for Mexico,” Ruiz Esparza said that today, according to all opinions, Mexico has the best economic potential but it is behind in infrastructure development.
He said that countries such as South Korea, the Netherlands, France and Germany have made significant progress in their economies because their infrastructure allows them to better regulate the cost of goods and shipment. He added that the SCT has identified 340 strategic projects to improve Mexican infrastructure.
Ruiz Esparza said that 81 percent of the national production are transported on highways. He said that 46 new highways would be built to improve product transportation. He added that the new highways will be representing more than half of the total highways built throughout Mexican history.
He said 20 new roads will be built and that more than 60 will be modernized, expanded or rebuilt. The total investment for roads will be 80 billion pesos. Ruiz Esparza said the SCT for 2013-2014 has stayed on budget and has made sure that the allotted funds go to infrastructure works to improve the country.
