Gold medal in biology olympiad is first for Mexico

biology olympiadMexico's gold medal junior biologist.

A Mexican biology student made history this month when he won a gold medal at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
José de Jesús García Lima of San Luis Potosí was one of 26 gold medal winners at a competition that tests knowledge and skills in the field of biology through an extensive theory exam and four practical tests in themes that ranged from cellular and molecular biology to anatomy.
The students must demonstrate interest, initiative, creativity and perseverance in solving the problems given.
García Lima said on his return from the event, held this year in Bali, Indonesia, that he spent three years working towards it.
Now in its 25th year, the IBO brings together the world’s top junior biologists — four from each country for a total of 238 this year — from the secondary school level.
Mexico has participated in the IBO for the past 15 years but has never won a gold medal until now. Two other Mexican students won bronze and an honorable mention.
