Strengthening the electronics and technology industry represents a great opportunity for Mexico, says Roberto García, vice-president materials of consumer technology company Plantronics.
Part of this opportunity is related to the fact that salaries have been increasing in China at 15% annually, while those in Mexico are rising more slowly at 4%, offering a competitive labor market, said García in an interview with Notimex.
But today Plantronics de Mexico, with a factory in Tijuana, buys 85% of its supplies from China and only 10% in Mexico. García recalled that 10 years ago much of this country’s electronics production left. Until then, products such as microphones and telephones were being made here.
Plantronics sees that production coming back., and points to the automotive industry as an example of what’s possible in electronics over the next five to 10 years.
The company also sees continued growth in products such as hands-free bluetooth communications devices and wireless headsets, as many jurisdictions are prohibiting the use of hand-held devices such as phones will driving a vehicle.
Another growth area is in headsets for fitness buffs who like to go running and listen to music, said Plantronics’ sales director Claudio Briceño. “It’s a very strong trend.”
The 50-year-old firm has been manufacturing in Tijuana for 42 years, where it employs more than 2,000 people. Globally its sales are more than US $800 million annually.
Its products include headsets, speakerphones, telephones, audio processors and accessories. Like some other well known, successful technology companies, Plantronics too had its beginnings in a garage, in Santa Cruz, California.
