MEXICO CITY – Senate PRI Coordinator Emilio Gamboa Patrón announced on Sunday that the energy reform legislation President Enrique Peña Nieto proposed to congress on April 30 has been modified from the original draft.
He said that all the political forces involved in the debate, without exception, have been actively participating and sharing ideas.
“We want reform that will benefit the people in the short term,” said Gamboa. “We need energy security, to stimulate industrial activity, and to boost economic development through increased competitiveness, productivity and energy sustainability, without neglecting our environment.”
The senator expressed confidence that “the democratic maturity of the 128 senators will prevail.”
However, Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) Coordinator Miguel Barbosa Huerta left the discussion, accusing the Institutional Revolution Party (PRI) of adding illegal provisions and vowing to return only when the legislation is debated in full.
One of the amendments to the proposed legislation would affect the electrical industry. PRI Senator Héctor Yunes warned that without the changes energy prices will go up, “creating a less competitive national economy.”
Under the amendment the Federal Electricity Commission will remain the supplier for residential users and small to medium commercial and industrial users, providing service under government regulated rates.
Regular users will not experience any change to their services or payment methods, he added. The energy secretary will determine a different figure for industrial and commercial users who exceed the normal consumption threshold.
National Action Party (PAN) Senator Jorge Luis Lavalle Maury said that the proposed legislation would boost competitiveness and productivity.
