MEXICO CITY – Describing sustainable water management as a priority of the federal government, President Enrique Peña Nieto announced on Thursday a 415 billion-peso ($31.8 billion) investment in water management projects.
Speaking from the official presidential residence of Los Pinos after the 52nd Governors Meeting of the World Water Council, Peña Nieto said the days of gathering water easily and cheaply are over. Sustainable water management, he said, is recognized internationally as the best strategy.
The president warned that the country faces water management challenges.
Some 35 million Mexicans have insufficient access to water in terms of quality and quantity. Per capita accessibility has decreased from 180,035 cubic meters in 1950 to 3,982 cubic meters in 2013.
Water politics are fundamental at a national and global level, said the president. “Mexico is determined that water development continues to move foreword locally, regionally and nationally for present and future generations,” he said.
As part of the National Infrastructure Program in place for the rest of Peña Nieto’s term, the administration will allocate the 415 billion pesos to water works over the duration of his term.
The National Water Program defines the strategies and actions for more efficient and sustainable use of water, said Peña Nieto.
“Count on Mexico to advance in this direction and to continue to work towards true water security around the world,” said the president.
