Stingrays and Jellyfish Invade Mazatlán Beaches

Mazatlán’s Civil Protection Agency issued an alert to the residents of the city saying that sting rays and jellyfish have invaded Mazatlán’s beaches. The agency called upon the citizens to take extra care because of danger.
The Civil Protection Agency said that stings by these creatures can have serious consequences. Contact with a sting ray, usually by stepping on one, causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain, swelling, and muscle cramps from the venom, and possible later infection from bacteria or fungi. Immediate injuries to humans include, but are not limited to: poisoning, punctures, severed arteries and veins, and occasionally death. Fatal stings are very rare, but can happen.
Most jellyfish stings are mild and don’t require treatment or they can be treated by the injured person. However, immediate emergency care should be sought if there are severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or if a large or sensitive area of the body such as the face or genitals has been stung.
Óscar Roberto Osuna Tirado, Coordinator of Mazatlán’s Civil Protection Agency, said white flags are placed on the city’s beaches where people should be on the watch for sting rays and jellyfish.
