Int’l climate change meeting begins

THE NEWS
Representatives of the world’s leading economies announced on Thursday that they have made progress in designing a new global agreement to fight climate change.
During a Mexico City meeting of the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate (MEF), Mexican Environment Secretary Juan José Guerra Abud said that fighting climate change is of the utmost importance.
“Climate change has already caught up to us,” Guerra Abud said. “Floods, droughts, out-of-season snowfall, hurricanes, tornados — there’s no doubt that they’re forceful evidence that climate change is already here, and in Mexico we have no doubt that this is the great challenge of the 21st century and there’s no other matter that requires the combined attention of humanity more than this one.”
Guerra Abud said that although Mexico is only responsible for 1.4 percent of world greenhouse gas emissions, it has done its part to pass legislation that he says will reduce emissions over the short and medium term.
He said that last year’s energy reform will allow Mexico to promote the use of clean energy, reducing its emissions by up to 30 percent by 2020, though the reform will also allow state-run oil company Pemex to carry out environmentally controversial practices such as hydraulic fracturing.
The MEF brings together the countries with the 17 largest economies in the world, which together generate 85 percent of the world’s greenhouse gases, to discuss strategies to cut emissions and promote clean energy.
