The local meteorological service of the National Water Commission issued an alert yesterday for this weekend when temperatures could hit 34ºC in Mazatlán with a heat index of between 45ºC and 50ºC as a consequence of the effects of tropical storm Amanda in the Pacific Ocean.
At a temperature of 34ºC with humidity over 70 percent the body senses more heat than is actually present, said head of the meteorological service Hugo Nordahl Valdez, and some complain they are literally burning up when the heat index reaches 50 degrees.
He told reporters Mazatlecans should take extreme precaution during the heat wave and remain hydrated and avoid exposure to the sun between noon and 4pm when radiation from the sun is at its peak.
The prediction for this weekend is mostly cloudy in the mornings with occasional storms. The clouds are a result of Amanda and extend from Michoacán to Sinaloa, Nordahl Valdez said. Where heavy rain could fall is in the sierras of the municipality but the city will see only occasional storms or light to moderate rainfall.
