MEXICO CITY – The nation’s economy is “on track,” President Enrique Peña Nieto said Monday as he inaugurated the 6th Government Procurement Expo 2014.
The president cited figures released by the National Statistics Institute (INEGI) showing that industrial production rose 3.4 percent in March 2014 when compared to statistics from March of 2013.
“These were above the expectations of most economic analysts,” said Peña Nieto.
Surrounded by business representatives and part of his economic cabinet, the president said that the manufacturing industry grew 6.8 percent, which is the highest growth rate since March of 2010.
He also cited employment data released by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), which showed a 3.2 percent increase in jobs created.
“These numbers prove that the economy is on track, and that is precisely what we want for all productive sectors of our country,” Peña Nieto said.
He went on to affirm the positive impact of public spending on the nation’s economy, making it greater and more transparent.
The president said that three of every four jobs are generated by micro, small and medium-sized businesses (often referred to as Mipymes), a topic that was stressed during the Expo.
“Public spending is becoming more and more democratic because today it involves a larger number of companies, including small-scale businesses,” he said.
In 2013, the federal government spent over 102.522 billion pesos on goods and services, which is 8.650 billion pesos more than what was spent in 2012.
Peña Nieto said during the Expo that government spending will give way to a more dynamic internal economy.
