MEXICO CITY –National Water Commission head David Korenfeld introduced Wednesday the 2014-2018 National Water Program, which he said would ensure the security and sustainability of the country’s water supply.
During his presentation at the Mexico College of Civil Engineers, Korenfeld said the plan’s economic and financial vision includes a potential investment of 417 billion pesos for infrastructure alone during the current administration of President Enrique Peña Nieto. That amount would be considerably more than the amount invested previously in this sector.
One of the highlights of the plan, according to Korenfeld, will be the investment of 94 billion pesos of resource used for drinking water and irrigation, which would support the rural sector and lead to improved harvests.
The program’s principal objectives, as outlined by the Conagua director, are:
To strengthen the management and sustainability of the water system, including the organization of water use in watersheds and aquifers.
Increase water security and prepare residents and water systems alike for events such as drought and flood.
To increase efficiency in access to services of potable water, which includes expanding coverage to 94 percent, treating up to 93 percent of sewage and sanitation and disinfecting up to 99 percent of water.
To improved technical and scientific capabilities that encourage effective social participation and increase knowledge in the community regarding hydrological cycles, water availability, treatment processes and all the other economic and social aspects that may be affected.
