Inaugurating the 2014 Mexico Tourism Tianguis in Cancun, Quintana Roo, President Enrique Peña Nieto said that Mexico’s place as the second-most visited country in Latin America positions it as a powerful force in world tourism.
Accompanied by Quintana Roo Governor Roberto Borge and Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu, the president pointed out that 2013 was the most successful year of tourism for Mexico.
Some 23.7 million international tourists visited the country, contributing$14 billion to the national economy, an 8 percent increase over 2012.
Peña Nieto said tourism is one of the six principal pillars of the 2014 National Infrastructure Program, and a key to the transformation of the country. Of the 7.7 billion pesos in the overall plan, more than 180 million pesos will be allocated to the industry.
These resources will be applied in various improvement strategies, such as beach cleanup, the renovation of historical centers and colonial cities, and a program of support for the magical towns program, with the goal of increasing their number to 100 by the end of the administration.
The Tianguis this year has more than 152 booths and more than 800 tourism industry operatives from five continents.
The president of the National Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Tourism Services, Enrique Solana, said that tourism contributes a 9 percent of the national GDP and that the sector employs some 2.5 million people.
